Windows 7 is fast, stable and far more reliable than we'd expect from a first public beta.

And while it doesn't include major new features, take the time to explore and you'll find lots of useful changes that will make a real difference in how you use your PC.

Like any version of Windows there are various tips, tweaks and hacks you can perform to get your PC working the way you want it.

Here's our first guide on how to get the most from your Windows 7 installation.

1. Protect your MP3 files
Along with many good new features, the Windows 7 beta also includes a nasty bug. Its version of Windows Media Player 12 will automatically add missing metadata, including album art, and this can overwrite the first few seconds of the file. Oops. Installing an update may fix this (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961367) but it would be a very good idea to back up your MP3 files, too.

2. Right-click everything
At first glance Windows 7 bears a striking resemblance to Vista, but there's an easy way to begin spotting the differences - just right-click things.

Right-click an empty part of the desktop, for instance, and you'll find a menu entry to set your screen resolution. No need to go browsing through the display settings any more.

Right-click the Explorer icon on the taskbar for speedy access to common system folders: Documents, Pictures, the Windows folder, and more.

And if you don't plan on using Internet Explorer then you probably won't want its icon permanently displayed on the taskbar. Right-click the icon, select "Unpin this program from the taskbar", then go install Firefox, instead.

3. Fix the taskbar
The new Windows 7 taskbar acts as one big quick launch toolbar that can hold whatever program shortcuts you like (just right-click one and select Pin To Taskbar). And that's fine, except it does consume a little more screen real estate than we'd like. Shrink it to a more manageable size by right-clicking the Start orb, then Properties > Taskbar > Use small icons.

If you've no problem with the taskbar size, but find the way it combines icons to be confusing, then right-click the Start orb, click Properties > Taskbar and set "Taskbar buttons" to "Combine when taskbar is full" for a more familiar XP and Vista-style look.

4. Keyboard shortcuts
Windows 7 supports several useful new keyboard shortcuts.

Zoom in, where appropriate

5. Customise UAC
Windows Vista's User Account Control was a good idea in practice, but poor implementation put many people off - it raised far too many alerts. Fortunately Windows 7 displays less warnings by default, and lets you further fine-tune UAC to suit your preferred balance between security and a pop-up free life (Start > Control Panel > Change User Account Control Settings).

6. Display your drives
Click Computer in Windows 7 and you might see a strange lack of drives, but don't panic, it's just Microsoft trying to be helpful: drives like memory card readers are no longer displayed if they're empty. We think it's an improvement, but if you disagree then launch Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View and clear "Hide empty drives in the computer folder" to get your empty drives back.

7. Burn images
Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created.

8. Speedy video access
Want faster access to your Videos folder? Windows 7 now lets you add it to the Start menu. Just right-click the Start orb, click Properties > Start Menu > Customize, and set the Videos option to "Display as a link". If you've a TV tuner that works with Windows 7 then you'll appreciate the new option to display the Recorded TV folder on the Start menu, too.

9. Run web searches
The Windows 7 search tool can now be easily extended to search online resources, just as long as someone creates an appropriate search connector. To add Flickr support, say, visit I Started Something [http://www.istartedsomething.com/flickrsearch], click Download the Connector, choose the Open option and watch as it's downloaded (the file is tiny, it'll only take a moment). A "Flickr Search" option will be added to your Searches folder, and you'll be able to search images from your desktop.

10. Explore everywhere
Launch Paint or Wordpad and you'll immediately spot the new Office-style ribbon interface, a real improvement in what were very dated applets. But other improvements are a little less obvious. At first glance the Windows calculator looks much the same, for instance, but the Mode menu leads to powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more. Be sure to explore every menu option in Calculator and all the other Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

Create invisible folder in windows & xp by using follwing tricks. The folder will not be hidden but will be invisible to eyes, as it’ll be same as background & it’s icon is like that.

Steps are below:-
1)Right Click on the desktop.Make a new folder
2)Now rename the folder to a unnamed one (to do this u have to hold ALT key and type 0160 or hold on Alt key and type 255(numlock should be on & use numpads ) ).
3)Now u have a folder with out a name.
4)Right click on the folder>properties>customize. Click on change icon.
5)Scroll a bit, u should find some empty spaces,(empty or blank iconimage) Click on any one of them. Press ok.

When working on in Photoshop or other image editing / graphic design program, this is a useful tool, sometimes you need to take an image from the the web to import in your graphic design program, the longer was is to save the image to your hard drive then from your program, open another document, find the location you saved the image to and open it. The copy + paste is a lot quicker and it's easy to do.

Step 1) After finding the image you want to work with, move your mouse cursor over it and do a "right-click".

Step 2) From the menu that appears, select "Copy".

Step 3) Go to your graphic program and do another "right-click" on the document you are working on and select "paste" from the menu.

That's it... it's a quick way to get the images your graphic work.

Ahead of the hotly anticipated T-Mobile G1 smartphone's arrival in stores next week, early reviews show not everyone is convinced that the Android-powered handset is ready to take on the Apple iPhone or muscle onto the turf of Windows Mobile or the BlackBerry.

Yet among reviewers and industry watchers, there's still little doubt that the G1 offers big potential for driving smartphone innovation.

One of the earliest reviews of the HTC-manufactured device, which was first introduced by Google and T-Mobile last month, came from the Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg, who called it a "worthy competitor" to the iPhone in his column this week. But Mossberg also saw several areas in need of improvement in its software and its hardware.

The New York Times's David Pogue described the handset's Android platform as "polished enough to give Windows Mobile an inferiority complex the size of Australia." Yet Pogue's scorecard similarly illustrated that the G1 isn't perfect. He gave it an A-minus for software, a B-minus for phone capabilities and a B-minus for network capabilities.

Avi Greengart, mobile device research director at Current Analysis, came to a similar conclusion on the G1 -- calling it an iPhone "challenger" that "falls short in every area."

The early reviews come as the mobile phone industry is seeking to come to grips with an influx of powerful, new devices. That's driven in part by competition: wireless carriers are finding themselves relying on increasingly advanced smartphones to woo more subscribers and increase revenue from lucrative non-voice services, like Web access. T-Mobile is the exclusive G1 carrier and AT&T is currently the exclusive iPhone network in the U.S.

Among those new consumer-oriented devices is the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone, which has rocketed in popularity since its debut a year ago and sparked a trend in consumer handsets toward touchscreens and easy access to third-party applications.

Not surprisingly, the iPhone also spawned a slew of competitors, among which the Google-backed Android platform is one of the most closely watched.

Hits and misses

And despite some initial criticism, the G1's early reviewers still find a good deal about it to praise.

"This is a competitive product," Greengart told InternetNews.com, noting G1's "beautiful" touchscreen. The G1 features a 3.2-inch LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with 320 x 480 resolution. The iPhone has 3.5-inch widescreen, multi-touch display with 480 x 320 resolution.

Greengart also complimented the G1's Web browsing capability -- built off the same engine as the iPhone's, he said -- and its GPS application that provides real-time street views for navigation.

On the downside, Greengart wasn't impressed with the G1's girth, describing it as "heavier and bulkier" than the iPhone. The G1 weighs in at 5.6 ounces, and is 4.6 inches tall, 2.16 inches wide and.62 inches in thickness. Apple's iPhone weighs 4.7 ounces and measures 4.5 inches in length, 2.4 inches wide and .48 inches thick.

Greengart also noted that the G1 offers no easy way to sync with non-Google mail applications, such as Microsoft Outlook, which enterprise users may find frustrating. The latest edition of the iPhone connects to Microsoft Exchange for access to e-mail, calendar and contacts.

"What Android does offer with the G1 is [smartphone development] potential, and some of these [downsides] will hopefully change with development going forward," Greengart said.

It's that potential that some say could result in Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) ultimately striding ahead of Apple and other smartphone players, such as Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), Palm (NASDAQ: PALM), Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT), in the battle for smartphone sales and mobile service revenue.

Exposing The Hacker
It is our desire that by exposing these "tricks of the trade" the Internet user will be better prepared with the knowledge and tools needed not be fooled by the following hacker tricks. We will use the Hacker Eliminator software as a basis for defeating these tricks, because every hacker trick and every trojan type has been taken into account during the years that it took for us to develop it.

Windows Hidden File Extensions
You might not be aware of this, but even if you tell Windows to show all file extensions there are still some that are hidden by default. Also, any installed program can configure extensions to be hidden. This is why you will find a special window in Hacker Eliminator that will show you what extensions are being hidden and allow you to toggle them unhidden. Extensions window in the Hacker Eliminator menu will automatically mark any potentially dangerous hidden extensions in red, so that you will know which ones to toggle to unhidden. Here are a couple of examples on how this works and why some hidden extensions could be a danger to some computer users. Assuming that you already configured Windows explorer to show all extensions:

SHS Extensions

Make a copy of notepad.exe and put it on your desktop.
Open Wordpad
Click and drag notepad.exe into the open wordpad document.
Click and drag it back to the desktop
Rename the file that it created (Scrap) to Readme.txt

You now have what appears to be a text document icon and a clearly named readme.txt file showing on your desktop. Click on the text file and the notepad opens up. If this were a trojan, you would have been fooled and infected by what seemed to be a harmless text file. If the extension was allowed to be seen you would not have been fooled by the file Readme.txt.shs

PIF Extensions
Next, try renaming notepad.exe to anything.txt.pif You will only see the file name anything.txt on your desktop. This is because PIF is another extension that Windows hides by default. If you run the file it will execute the program, this is because Windows will also execute PIF extensions as if they were executable files.

SCR Extensions
Another extension to watch out for is SCR. Rename your copy of notepad.exe to notepad.scr and click on it. It will run notepad as an executable file. Many people have been fooled by hackers taking over a victim's account. The hacker sends email or other type of message to all of the victim's friends saying "Check out this cool new screen saver, you will laugh your butt off!" Because the message came from a trusted source, most were fooled and ran the SCR file and then ended up with a hacker connecting to their computer. Hacker Eliminator scans all SCR files for trojan infections by default.

Dangerous Commands That Can Be Embedded

PIF Shortcut Extensions

Some hidden file extensions can easily be programmed with hidden commands that could do damage to your system. Following is a simple test:

Right click your mouse on your desktop and select New
and then ShortCut
In the command line type: format a: /autotest
Click Next
In the "Select a name for the shortcut" area type: readme.txt
Click Next
Select a notepad icon and click Finish

You now have a file on your desktop called readme.txt with a notepad icon. Make sure there is a disk in your drive that you do not mind being wiped and click on the icon. The file that you click on will do a format on the disk in the A: drive. Of course, the hacker's icon would target another drive, or maybe have a name such as 'game.exe' and with a command to delete your Windows directory or (deltree /y c:\*.*) your entire C drive!

If the PIF extension were not hidden, this would not be able to fool you. And if it was added to your startup folder waiting for a reboot, Hacker Eliminator would warn you within seconds.

SHS Extensions

Scrap files can also hide embedded commands. Following is a simple test:

Make a copy of notepad.exe and put it on your desktop.
Open Wordpad
Click and drag notepad.exe into the open wordpad document.
Click on Edit and select Package Object, then select Edit Package
Click on Edit and then Command Line
Type a command in the box such as format a: /autotest and click on Ok
The Icon can also be changed from this edit window
Exit from the edit window and it will update the document
Click and drag notepad back to the desktop
Rename the file that it created (Scrap) to Readme.txt

You now have what will look like a text file. If it is run it will format the disk in the A: drive. As seen in the example above for PIF Shortcut Extensions, the hacker could use more dangerous commands.

Trojan Startup Methods
Most people do not know the many different ways that hackers are using to start trojan files. If a hacker infects your computer with a trojan, he will need to select a startup method so that the trojan will load when you reboot your computer. Common startup methods are the registry run keys, the Windows Startup folder, the Windows load= or run= lines found in the Win.ini file and the Shell= line found in the Windows System.ini.

Dangerous Startup Methods
Because there are only a handful of these startup methods, we find more hackers going to extremes to find new methods of startup. This includes using dangerous changes to the system registry, which will rend the system useless if the trojan file or it's companion file is ever removed. This is one reason not to use standard anti virus software to remove trojans. If one of these methods are used, and the file is removed without fixing the system registry, your system may not be able to run any programs after you reboot. Hacker Eliminator detects and repairs all of these dangerous startup methods as seen with this Sub7 infection.

The ICQ Startup Method
Another startup method now commonly used is the ICQ netdetect. Many ICQ users are not aware that a hacker can add a configuration line to ICQ in order to have it start the trojan every time that the program is loaded. As a test you can try the following:

Click on Connection
Click on Edit Launch List

There are several ways we can customize the start menu in XP to work more efficiently. We can customize it to take up less real estate on the screen, Stop annoying popup messages, customize the look and feel, etc. The first thing I would like to look at is stopping XP from highlighting newly installed programs. Every time you install a new program XP is set to highlight it on the Start menu by default.

To do this right click on the Start menu and select Properties. This opens up the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. From here just click on the Customize button.

Click on the Advanced tab and uncheck the box next to Highlight newly Installed Programs. Uncheck the box above will allow you to not have a lot of sub menus popping up while your searching through your programs.

Another trick is displaying menu items as classic and setting various settings there as well. This way the Start menu takes up a lot less real estate on your screen. This comes in handy especially if you are using a laptop or a smaller monitor. For this again right click on the Start menu and select Properties. This time click next to Classic Start Menu and hit the Customize button.

This opens the Customize Classic Start menu screen. This option not only gives you more space on the screen, but also makes accessing various components of XP much easier. For instance expanding the Control Panel allows access to everything directly from the Start menu. The same is true with My Document, Pictures, etc. If you are a power user and access Administrative tools quite often, then it is also good to check that box as well.

A very simple tip this one, but I have to admit I was not aware of it myself until today. I found I needed to clear all of the thumbnail images that are shown in the folder views within vista windows. I had installed a new codec pack, and wanted all of the thumbnails in my video library to be consistent in size and quality, so I needed to get rid of the old thumbnails.
Before those of you who already know how to do this start shouting at me saying it’s easy, I would like to defend myself by saying I have never had a need to reset my thumbnails before, and was expecting a much more complicated procedure. Actually, the reason I am posting such a simple tip, is that I am sure there are other folks out there like me, who had no idea where this particular feature of Windows Vista is tucked away hiding.
I scratched my head for a while, I could not remember seeing any system tools to rebuild icons or anything similar in control panel. I absolutely refused to Google up an answer, as I figured I should be able to work this out for myself. I am sorry to say it took me far too long to realise how to do this. In the end it was very simple.

Yes, as you can see, I finally found the option I was looking for when I fired up the disc cleanup utility. Ok, in my defense I would like to point out that both Windows XP and Windows 98 had a separate tool for rebuilding icons, so I was not expecting to just delete the thumbnails, I thought I would have to force some kind of system wide reset.

The following method will allows you to access any local account including Administrator’s on any Windows 2000 or Windows XP machine. The best thing about this trick is that you don’t have to mess around with password. So, Administrator will never know that anyone else has accessed his account. The following tool will create a god like password which can be used to login to any account. The only thing you’ll need is a CD or DVD-ROM drive.

You need to download a tool called DreamPackPL. It turns off the password protection features in Windows XP, thereby allowing you to log into any account. It’s a ready to burn ISO (4MB only). I do hope you know how to burn a CD. Follow the steps:
Burn the ISO into a CD-ROM.
Boot the system making the CD-ROM as first boot option in BIOS.
Boot from the CD.
A windows installation console will come up. Press R then C.
Backup your original sfcfiles.dll by typing:
“ren C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll sfcfiles.lld” (without quotes)
Copy the hacked file from CD to system32 folder. Type:
“copy H:\i386\pinball.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll” (without quotes and assuming your CD drive is H:)
Now type exit, reboot.
When you reach the logon screen, enter dreamon as the username or password.
The options window will open, there is a setting called God-Password, enable it and type the God Password there.

Now for any account, type the password which you have set in previous step to login.
Make sure you use the tool properly and responsibly.

As an IT Pro, I routinely monitor employee’s computers and emails. It’s essential in a work environment for administrative purposes as well as for security. Monitoring email, for example, allows you to block attachments that could contain a virus or spyware. The only time I have to connect to a user’s computer and do work on directly their computer is to fix a problem.

However, if you feel that you are being monitored when you shouldn’t be, there are a few little tricks you can use to determine if you’re right. First off, to monitor someone’s computer means that they someone can watch everything that you are doing on your computer in real time. Blocking porn sites, removing attachments or blocking spam before it gets to your Inbox, etc is not really monitoring, it’s more like filtering.

Computer Monitoring

So now, if you still think someone is spying on you, here’s what you can do! The good thing right now is that neither Windows XP SP2 nor Windows Vista support multiple concurrent connections while someone is logged into the console (there is a hack for this, but I would not worry about). What this means is that if you’re logged into your XP or Vista computer (like you are now if you’re reading this), and someone were to connect to it using the BUILT-IN REMOTE DESKTOP feature of Windows, your screen would become locked and it would tell tell you who is connected.

So why is that useful? It’s useful because it means that in order for someone to connect to YOUR session without you noticing or your screen being taken over, they have use third-party software and it’s a lot easier to detect third-party software than a normal process in Windows.

So now we’re looking for third-party software, which is usually referred to as remote control software or virtual network computing (VNC) software. First, the easy thing to do is to simply check in your Start Menu All Programs and check whether or not something like VNC, RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, etc is installed. A lot of times IT people are sloppy and figure that a normal user won’t know what a piece of software is and will simply ignore it. If any of those programs are installed, then someone can connect to your computer without you knowing it as long as the program is running in the background as a Windows service.

That brings us to the second point. Usually, if one of the above listed programs are installed, there will be an icon for it in the task bar because it needs to be constantly running to work.

Check all of your icons (even the hidden ones) and see what is running. If you find something you’ve not heard of, do a quick Google search to see what pops up. It’s usually quite hard to remove something from the taskbar, so if there is something installed to monitor your computer, it should be there.

However, if someone really sneaky installed it and nothing shows up there, you can try another way. Again, because these are third-party apps, they have to connect to Windows XP or Vista on different communication ports. Ports are simply a virtual data connection by which computers share information directly. As you may already know, XP and Vista come with a built-in Firewall that blocks many of the incoming ports for security reasons. If you’re not running an FTP site, why should your port 23 be open, right?

So in order for these third-party apps to connect to your computer, they must come through a port, which has to be open on your computer. You can check all the open ports by going to Start, Control Panel, and Windows Firewall.

Click on the Exceptions tab and you’ll see see a list of programs with check boxes next to them. The ones that are checked are “open” and the unchecked or unlisted ones are “closed”. Go through the list and see if there is a program you’re not familiar with or that matches VNC, remote control, etc. If so, you can block the program by un-checking the box for it!

The only other way I can think of to see if someone is connected to your computer is to see if there are any processes running under a different name! If you go to the Windows Task Manager (press Cntr + Shift + Esc together) and go to the Processes tab, you’ll see a column titled User Name.

Scroll through all the processes and you should only see your user name, Local Service, Network Service, and System. Anything else means someone is logged into the computer!

Email & Web Site Monitoring

To check whether your email is being monitored is quite simple. Always, when you send an email from Outlook or some email client on your computer, it has to connect to the email server. Now it can either connect directly or it can connect through what is called a proxy server, which takes a request, alters or checks it, and forwards it on to another server.

If you’re going through a proxy server for email or web browsing, than the web sites you access or the emails you write can be saved and viewed later on. You can check for both and here’s how. For IE, go to Tools, then Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab and choose LAN Settings.

If the Proxy Server box is checked and it has a local IP address with a port number, then that means you’re going through a local server first before it reaches the web server. This means that any web site you visit first goes through another server running some kind of software that either blocks the address or simply logs it.

For your email, you’re checking for the same thing, a local IP address for the POP and SMTP mail servers. To check in Outlook, go to Tools, Email Accounts, and click Change or Properties, and find the values for POP and SMTP server.

If you’re working in a big corporate environment, it’s more than likely that the Internet and email are being monitored. You should always be careful in writing emails or browsing web sites while at the office. Trying to break through the security also might get you in trouble if they find out you bypassed their systems! IT people don’t like that, I can tell you from experience!

Are you looking for a quick way to detect whether one of your Yahoo Messenger buddies is ACTUALLY offline or just Invisible? Apparently lots of people would like to know how to detect whether someone is invisible or not! I only realized this because I’ve been asked 10 times! I’m still not sure why it would matter because OBIVOUSLY your buddy doesn’t want to talk to you otherwise they would not be invisible!

But either way, I guess some people just need to know for the sake of knowing (especially guys and gals who want to know whether someone is avoiding them).

So here’s 5 ways I found on the Internet that you can use to discover whether a buddy is really online and set as invisible or whether they are simply logged off.

Invisible Scanner - Does just as the name suggests, finds those invisible folks and exposes them for who they really are! Worked on my tests.
Invisible.ir - Another new one that works really well. You can also do some other things like check multiple Yahoo users at once and detect a users main Yahoo ID.
Buddy Spy - The other two services mentioned above were web services, but Buddy Spy is a little program that you can download and install on your computer. It suggests that it’s “simply the best in invisible detection”! I’m not so sure about that, but I’ve heard it works most of the time.
Xeeber.com - Another online service to detect invisible users, but I am putting this at number 4 because it didn’t work when I tried it. Maybe the site was down, but entering and name and clicking search resulted in nothing happening! So maybe it was just bad timing by me because some people swear by it!
BuddyCheck - Another program that you can download and install, which will show you exactly who is online and who is offline. This is the only one that costs some money, about $20, so if you’re REALLY crazy about finding out if someone is truly invisible, this is the app for you!

How To Increase Perfomance Windows XP

Since defragging the disk won't do much to improve Windows XP performance, here are 23 suggestions that will. Each can enhance the performance and reliability of your customers' PCs. Best of all, most of them will cost you nothing.

1.) To decrease a system's boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software -- the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine -- and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer.

2.) If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance.

3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you're not sure, here's how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it's important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives.

4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a "searchable keyword index." As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.

The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP's built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for.

Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you're a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it.

Here's how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching." Next, apply changes to "C: subfolders and files," and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as "Access is denied"), click the Ignore All button.

5.) Update the PC's video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly, see this article on my site.

6.) Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can "prefetch" portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That's fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete.

7.) Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here's how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button -- it's just to the right of the Capacity pie graph -- and delete all temporary files.

8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if available" for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

9.) Upgrade the cabling. As hard-drive technology improves, the cabling requirements to achieve these performance boosts have become more stringent. Be sure to use 80-wire Ultra-133 cables on all of your IDE devices with the connectors properly assigned to the matching Master/Slave/Motherboard sockets. A single device must be at the end of the cable; connecting a single drive to the middle connector on a ribbon cable will cause signaling problems. With Ultra DMA hard drives, these signaling problems will prevent the drive from performing at its maximum potential. Also, because these cables inherently support "cable select," the location of each drive on the cable is important. For these reasons, the cable is designed so drive positioning is explicitly clear.

10.) Remove all spyware from the computer. Use free programs such as AdAware by Lavasoft or SpyBot Search & Destroy. Once these programs are installed, be sure to check for and download any updates before starting your search. Anything either program finds can be safely removed. Any free software that requires spyware to run will no longer function once the spyware portion has been removed; if your customer really wants the program even though it contains spyware, simply reinstall it. 11.) Remove any unnecessary programs and/or items from Windows Startup routine using the MSCONFIG utility. Here's how: First, click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, and click OK. Click the StartUp tab, then uncheck any items you don't want to start when Windows starts. Unsure what some items are? Visit the WinTasks Process Library. It contains known system processes, applications, as well as spyware references and explanations. Or quickly identify them by searching for the filenames using Google or another Web search engine.

12.) Remove any unnecessary or unused programs from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel.

13.) Turn off any and all unnecessary animations, and disable active desktop. In fact, for optimal performance, turn off all animations. Windows XP offers many different settings in this area. Here's how to do it: First click on the System icon in the Control Panel. Next, click on the Advanced tab. Select the Settings button located under Performance. Feel free to play around with the options offered here, as nothing you can change will alter the reliability of the computer -- only its responsiveness.

14.) If your customer is an advanced user who is comfortable editing their registry, try some of the performance registry tweaks offered at Tweak XP.

15.) Visit Microsoft's Windows update site regularly, and download all updates labeled Critical. Download any optional updates at your discretion.

16.) Update the customer's anti-virus software on a weekly, even daily, basis. Make sure they have only one anti-virus software package installed. Mixing anti-virus software is a sure way to spell disaster for performance and reliability.

17.) Make sure the customer has fewer than 500 type fonts installed on their computer. The more fonts they have, the slower the system will become. While Windows XP handles fonts much more efficiently than did the previous versions of Windows, too many fonts -- that is, anything over 500 -- will noticeably tax the system.

18.) Do not partition the hard drive. Windows XP's NTFS file system runs more efficiently on one large partition. The data is no safer on a separate partition, and a reformat is never necessary to reinstall an operating system. The same excuses people offer for using partitions apply to using a folder instead. For example, instead of putting all your data on the D: drive, put it in a folder called "D drive." You'll achieve the same organizational benefits that a separate partition offers, but without the degradation in system performance. Also, your free space won't be limited by the size of the partition; instead, it will be limited by the size of the entire hard drive. This means you won't need to resize any partitions, ever. That task can be time-consuming and also can result in lost data.

19.) Check the system's RAM to ensure it is operating properly. I recommend using a free program called MemTest86. The download will make a bootable CD or diskette (your choice), which will run 10 extensive tests on the PC's memory automatically after you boot to the disk you created. Allow all tests to run until at least three passes of the 10 tests are completed. If the program encounters any errors, turn off and unplug the computer, remove a stick of memory (assuming you have more than one), and run the test again. Remember, bad memory cannot be repaired, but only replaced.

20.) If the PC has a CD or DVD recorder, check the drive manufacturer's Web site for updated firmware. In some cases you'll be able to upgrade the recorder to a faster speed. Best of all, it's free.

21.) Disable unnecessary services. Windows XP loads a lot of services that your customer most likely does not need. To determine which services you can disable for your client, visit the Black Viper site for Windows XP configurations.

22.) If you're sick of a single Windows Explorer window crashing and then taking the rest of your OS down with it, then follow this tip: open My Computer, click on Tools, then Folder Options. Now click on the View tab. Scroll down to "Launch folder windows in a separate process," and enable this option. You'll have to reboot your machine for this option to take effect.

23.) At least once a year, open the computer's cases and blow out all the dust and debris. While you're in there, check that all the fans are turning properly. Also inspect the motherboard capacitors for bulging or leaks. For more information on this leaking-capacitor phenomena, you can read numerous articles on my site.

Following any of these suggestions should result in noticeable improvements to the performance and reliability of your customers' computers. If you still want to defrag a disk, remember that the main benefit will be to make your data more retrievable in the event of a crashed drive.

After installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 in my home system, I found some error messages and it was running very slow so I have decided to reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 successfully but failed to install Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The installation started fine but at the end of the installation it displayed an error message

Googled for the error message and tried some troubleshooting steps found in Adobe KB article but never got a chance to reinstall Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended successfully. Uninstalled all the Adobe Photoshop related applications using Add or Remove Programs and Windows Clean up utility but every time it displayed the same error message.

Finally I have successfully reinstalled Photoshop using a simple command. If you are experiencing this issue, please try the following steps:

- Click Start > Program > Accessories > Command Prompt. Right Click and open it with Run As Administrator.
- Type CD\ and press Enter to go to C:\ prompt.
- Type the following command line at C:\ prompt
regsvr32 JScript.DLL and press Enter.
- Now reinstall Photoshop and check.

Here is the tweak and explanation of the tweak to quickly shutdown your Windows Vista based PC.

For Windows XP Users:

Note: Before editing the registry, please take a back up of it. It is quite simple and can be done by clicking file > Export in registry editor menu and putting the file name of the backup and clicking on save.

- Click on Start and Type regedit in the search box and hit Enter.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> Control Panel >> Desktop
- Look at the right pane to locate the key WaitToKillAppTimeout, double click on it and change the value to something between 4000 and 5000. (Lesser the value more quicker will be shutdown, the value is in milliseconds).
- Click on Ok and the settings will be saved.

The key WaitToKillAppTimeout determines how long the system waits for user processes to end after the user attempts to log off or to shut down. When the time specified in this entry expires, the End Task dialog box appears, stating that the process did not respond. So now we need to do some tweak so that end task dialog box will not appear. Right? The key responsible for this is AutoEndTasks.

In registry editor Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> Control Panel >> Desktop

Look for AutoEndTasks key in the right pane and double click on it. The default value will be 0, change it to 1. Click on OK. This will not display the end task dialog box.

For Vista Users:

The key WaitToKillAppTimeout is replaced by WaitToKillServiceTimeout in Vista and the location has also changed.

- In Vista navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
- In right pane, look for WaitToKillServiceTimeout and double click on it. Change the value to around 5000. Click on OK.

Change the Screen Saver Grace Period in Windows XP

Screen saver password protection is a nifty feature of Windows that can be used to make sure no one messes with your stuff if you’re away from the desktop for a while. But let’s say you’re reading this article and suddenly the screen saver is displayed; it can be a bit annoying to be repeatedly asked to type in the password. That is why there’s a hidden setting called the grace period.

If you dismiss the screen saver within the grace period, you won’t be asked for the password. However, the grace period doesn’t appear in the screen saver settings, so the only way to change it without additional software, is a simple registry hack.

Before I start, I must warn you that the registry is a crucial part of your system and messing around with it is dangerous. Although it can’t set off some nuclear reaction, improper use of the registry can severely damage your system. So, I only recommend registry hacks if you’re familiar with the registry or at least able to follow my instructions carefully. If you don’t feel comfortable digging into the registry, you can use Microsoft’s Tweak UI to achieve the same results.

Open Registry Editor: Click start | Click Run… | Type regedit | Press Enter

Navigate to the following key (if it doesn’t exist, create it): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look for a string value called ScreenSaverGracePeriod (if it doesn’t exist, create it).

Change the value data to the number of seconds you want the grace period to be.

Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

You’ll probably want to check everything was done properly, but remember, you can’t use the screen saver preview from Display Properties to do that, because you won’t be prompted for a password. You have to wait for a screen saver to appear by itself to see whether the changes have taken effect.

A few days ago I found a thread at OrigamiProject forum with a some registry keys that according to the author could speed up Vista a little bit in our devices.

Here are the two keys that needs to be changed:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\

Change EnableSuperfetch from 3 to 0.

And:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Change DisablePagingExecutive from 0 to 1.

You will notice a good improvement in Outlook 2007 and other applications. If you want to know what every key does and some tests result, check this thread.

Warning: Do no apply the second trick unless you have at least 1Gb of RAM.

Update: James Kendrick tested this hack just reported that all his issue with HDD trashing without reason has disappeared after applying this hack. In another hand, I just prepared a VBS Script to apply this hack.

Updated 2: Kevin is reporting that when the page excutive is disabled his Zune skips 20 seconds before the end of each song.

Kohjinsha SC3 Review

Poketables.net has published the first full review of the Kohjinsha SC3. The photos are just incredible good. Two things that gained my attention, performance is about the same I have in my old Q1 Celeron at 900 MHz with 2 GB of RAM running Vista and the battery life is about 2.5 hours using WiFi. The Q1P with a Pentium M at 1 GHz had that same performance and Battery Life. did you get my point Intel? Anyway... Detect viruses in a computer using multiple antivirus engines

But today an interesting tip, how to scan your system without any installed antivirus program. You can scan any specific file for viruses, malware, worms and trojans on your system without any preloaded antivirus protection.

VirusTotal is a free service that facilitates you for quick scan to detect viruses, malware, worms and trojans. VirusTotal will analyze your system files using multiple antivirus engines. VirusTotal is not a proper substitute of installed antivirus program, because this service works only when you will be connected to internet.

Now open the VirusTotal site to start scan process.

Now under the "Upload the file" section, click on browse button to select the virus affected file and press "Send File" button.

Here VirusTotal will takes some time to upload file (depends upon the file size and internet speed).

Now scanning process will be started to scan affected file.

It will again takes some time to scan affected file using latest antivirus version and gives you detailed results from each antivirus engine with statistics.

How to extract 001 files?

Most of the archived files that you can download have the following filenames: name.part01.rar, name.part02.rar, name.part03.rar etc. You can extract those files with WinRAR or the free program 7-Zip. But sometimes you will see files with the following filenames: name.001, name.002, name.003 etc, which I will call 001 files. In this tutorial you will learn how to extract these files. Extracting isn't the right name though: normally these files are not compressed like RAR files, but just split by a file splitter, without compression. Joining would be a better term for what we are about to do.

In this tutorial we will try to join the test.mp3 file that I made. As you can see in the image below this file is split into eight pieces that we have to join before we can listen to the test.mp3 file.

We can do this with two different programs: 7-Zip or HJSplit. It is up to you to choose which program you would like to use for this task: 7-Zip or HJSplit.

Joining with 7-Zip

The free program 7-Zip is suitable for joining 001 files.

After installing 7-Zip, right click on the first file (name.001) in the Windows Explorer and choose 'Extract here' in the 7-Zip submenu of the context menu. 7-Zip will extract the archive and place the extract files into the same directory as where the source files are located. You could also choose 'Open archive' to view the archive in 7-Zip or extract the file to another directory by choosing 'Extract files'. Easy!

Joining with HJSplit

There is a great chance that the person who posted the files used the program HJSplit to split the file to create 001 files. This freeware program is also able to join 001 files.

You do not have to install HJSplit. Just extract the 'hjsplit.zip' and double click on HJSplit.exe to start HJSplit. The main window of HJSplit appears. Since we want to join the files, click on 'Join':

In the new window select the first file of the files that we would like to join, so test.mp3.001 in this case, and click on 'Open' after that.

Click on 'Start':

Now HJSplit will join the file. When it is finished you will see this message:

Google Changes Home Page, Adding Link to Privacy Policy

Google, with its deep reservoir of data about online behavior gathered by tracking hundreds of millions of computers, is for the first time testing ways to use some of that data to aim ads at Web users

Google's homepage at google.com has been changed: the search engine leader has decided that a privacy link, which leads to the company's straightforward Privacy Center, should be fit somewhere on its first page. But there was also the company policy of keeping things neat and thin, with a fixed word count of 28 words on the homepage.

What could then be removed to make room for the "Privacy" word and link? Looking around, there was this one word that seemed superfluous: Google, in the copyright notice at the bottom of the search homepage. Consequently, the "©2008 Google" was changed into "©2008 Privacy," with the Privacy hyperlinked to www.google.com/intl/en/privacy.html

Marissa Mayer, VP Search Products & User Experience at Google, explained the whole word count thing on a company blog. Apparently they got into the whole "keep it thin" thing after a user kept sending cryptic emails which had a number as subject. The messages were like "61, getting a bit heavy, aren't we?" Finally, the mystery was cracked and Mayer realized that the person was talking about the number of words on the Google homepage, which were only 13 when it was launched back in 1999.

What Marissa Mayer doesn't mention is that privacy organizations wrote to Google CEO Eric Schmidt last month requesting such as change. It appears that California law requires that all pages have a privacy link on their homepage.

The petition was signed by representatives from Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, the World Privacy Forum, Consumer Action, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and the Consumer Federation of California.

At first, Google said its privacy policy was easily accessible to users, and available to anyone through the “About Google” link. Furthermore, Google says that by adding it, it would change the purposely plain home page. According to California’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003, all companies need to put their privacy policy on their home page. However, Google did not completely ignore the law, which also states that the privacy policy can also be placed where a reasonable person would notice it.

The company said last month that anyone could simply type the words “Google privacy policy” and the search engine will find the page for them. However, it seems that Google wanted to play it safe and comply with the request in a more straightforward way.

If you needed any further confirmation that DRM copy protection on digital music is on its way out, Rhapsody just provided it. The download service just opened the doors on its MP3 store, selling copy-protection-free songs — encoded at a close-to-CD-quality 256 kbps bit rate — that you can copy over and over to iPods, PCs, CDs or any other nutty music-playing contraption or media you can think of. The first 100,000 people who sign up before July 4th will get a free album, and you can even download to your phone if you have Verizon service.
Great to see Rhapsody follow Amazon in dissing DRM. We certainly welcome a future where we can finally do what we want with the music we buy. Why does anyone still buy from iTunes again.
Another Story: Rhapsody to Challenge iTunes by Embracing the iPod

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Digital music seller Rhapsody is launching a $50 million marketing assault on Apple's iTunes, offering songs online and via partners including Yahoo Inc and Verizon Wireless, Rhapsody said on Monday.

The songs will be sold in MP3 format, which means users of the Rhapsody service will be able to play them on iPods.

Before now Rhapsody, jointly owned by Real Networks Inc and Viacom Inc's MTV Networks, had focused on a subscription service, allowing unlimited song streaming for $13 to $15 a month, rather than selling downloads.

But Rhapsody Vice President Neil Smith said the fact the service has not been compatible with Apple Inc's top-selling iPod digital player has limited Rhapsody's reach.

"We're no longer competing with the iPod," Smith said. "We're embracing it."

Rhapsody also will be the music store back-end to MTV's music Web sites and iLike, one of the most widely used music applications on social networking site Facebook.

Rhapsody will be available on mobile phones via the Verizon Wireless VCAST Music service. Buyers of a song over-the-air directly from phones also will be able to download that song to their computer. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

Rhapsody executives describe the strategy as "Music Without Limits." They said it would be backed by a marketing blitz worth up to $50 million in media space over the next year in part by leveraging co-parent MTV's TV networks and Web sites.

CHALLENGERS

Rhapsody is the latest player to challenge iTunes's 70 percent-plus market share of U.S. digital music sales.

Last month digital music service Napster Inc launched an MP3 store. Both Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Amazon.com Inc launched stores last year.
Its success has been due partly to a seamless interface between iTunes and the iPod and because it provides a good user experience, said analyst David Card of Jupiter Research.
The new digital MP3 stores have been made possible because the four major record groups last year started to experiment with allowing retailers to sell music without digital rights management (DRM) software to prevent illegal sharing of music.

Analysts believe the move by Vivendi's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI Group will help open the market for retailers and music companies.

"I think we'll see retailers begin to compete the way they usually compete with pricing, merchandising and promotions, rather than due to some arbitrary technology," Card said.

Yahoo rejected the offer of Microsoft to acquire Yahoo's search business and billionaire investor Carl Icahn that would have included the sale of Yahoo's search business to Microsoft. . . The offer, which was offered on Friday in cooperation with Yahoo investor Carl Icahn, was a variation on Microsoft's previous offer to acquire Yahoo's search business in exchange for cash, a partial stock buyout and revenue guarantees, required the complete replacement of the Yahoo board and executive management team stated that there was no room for negotiation.

Yahoo rejected it, saying that the Google search deal they've signed is a better deal and adding that the requirement to replace the board and executive team is "absurd and irresponsible given the complexity of the deal."

Icahn has criticized Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang for failing to close a deal with Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker. Microsoft, which on May 3 withdrew an offer to buy Yahoo, said on July 7 it may renew talks for a deal if Icahn, who controls about 69 million Yahoo shares, succeeds in ousting Yang and his board.

Yahoo formally offered to sell itself whole to Microsoft in the release as well, saying "the Board believes a whole company transaction could be negotiated and executed prior to August 1st," and suggesting Microsoft's original $33 offer will work just fine for them right now.
Yahoo! Suggests Microsoft Make A Proposal To Acquire Whole Company

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jul 12, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) ¿ Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, confirmed today that it has rejected a joint proposal from Microsoft Corporation and Carl Icahn for a complex restructuring of Yahoo! that would include the acquisition of Yahoo!'s search business by Microsoft.

The proposal was made on Friday evening and Yahoo! was given less than 24 hours to accept the proposal, the fundamental terms of which Microsoft and Mr. Icahn made clear they were unwilling to negotiate. After reviewing the proposal with its legal and financial advisers, Yahoo!'s Board of Directors determined that accepting the proposal is not in the best interests of its stockholders.

The Board's rejection of the proposal was based on a number of factors, including the following:

1. Yahoo!'s existing business plus its recently signed commercial agreement with Google has superior financial value and less complexity and risk than the Microsoft/Icahn proposal.

2. The Microsoft/Icahn proposal would preclude a potential sale of all of Yahoo! for a full and fair price, including a control premium

3. The major component of the overall value per share asserted by Microsoft/Icahn would be in Yahoo!'s remaining non-search businesses which would be overseen by Mr. Icahn's slate of directors, which has virtually no working knowledge of Yahoo!'s businesses.

4. The Microsoft/Icahn proposal would require the immediate replacement of the current Board and removal of the top management team at Yahoo!. The Yahoo! Board believes these moves would destabilize Yahoo! for the up to the one year it would take to gain regulatory approval for this deal.
Significantly, the Board believes Microsoft and Mr. Icahn are overstating the value their search and restructuring proposal would deliver to Yahoo! stockholders and are substantially understating the risks. Yahoo! noted that a transaction that would separate the Company's search and display businesses is an undertaking of great complexity. While the Board acknowledges that the current proposal contains a number of improvements over Microsoft's earlier proposal, the Yahoo! Board's conclusion that the current proposal is not in the best interests of stockholders is based on a number of factors, including:

¿ The revenue guarantees suggested, which are conditional and subject to reduction, are well below the search revenue that the Company is expected to generate on its own and in association with its announced commercial agreement with Google. Mozilla firefox hack :Add Simple POP3 Mail Client and Notifier to Firefox

If you like to have your entire computing experience within your Firefox window, you might be interested in accessing your POP email accounts directly in Firefox. The Simple Mail extension gives you this functionality, and true to the name it's very simple.

After installation, you should notice the little mail icon in the status bar, which will highlight and display an unread count if there are new messages, but first you'll want to right-click it and open the preferences to add your new account.

Here you can add a new account or import from Thunderbird (a feature I did not test)

Left-clicking on the mail icon will open the mail client interface, nothing more than a two-paned display of the messages sitting on your server. You can choose to delete the individual message through the right-click menu.

The new or reply options bring up the new email dialog, which is also really simple.

Thoughts

I would personally only use this as a pop mail notifier, as the client interface is just far too simple for any serious usage. There are much better options that you could use:

Forward your POP email directly to Gmail and access it from there.
Sign up for Google Apps for your Domain and use Gmail with your own email domain.
Use Gmail's Settings\Accounts tab to add in a POP email account that gmail will check for you.

You can use any of those options in conjunction with the excellent Gmail Manager extension for Firefox.

Mozilla firefox Hack Keyboard Ninja: Use StumbleUpon With The Toolbar Hidden

If you haven't heard of StumbleUpon you are probably still a very productive person. If you want to make your time-wasting sessions slightly more efficient, you can use the keyboard to stumble instead of clicking the Stumble! button.

I've calculated that you could save an entire 32 seconds per year this way, which is at least one more stumble (well worth it). It will also allow you to stumble without having the toolbar visible, so you have more screen space to stumble with.

Just click on the Stumble toolbar's Tools menu and choose Toolbar Options.

Select the Shortcuts tab and then check the box for "Enable stumbling shortcuts" to enable the hotkeys.

You can change the shortcut keys if you wanted to, just click in the new shortcut key box and press your new key. When you've chosen it, click the Change button.

Enable Hidden BootScreen in Windows Vista

The Windows Vista BootScreen is pointless, but Microsoft decided to hide a more visually appealing boot screen that can easily be enabled with very little trouble. I'm not sure why they didn't make the boot screen better.

Here's the default boot screen:

And here's the hidden one, called "Aurora"

All you have to do is type msconfig into the start menu search box, and hit enter.

Click the Boot tab, and then check the "No GUI boot" checkbox.

Hit OK and reboot the computer. You should see the new boot screen immediately.

Note: You may get a Windows Defender error on the next startup. You can enable the system config utility using the tray icon and this error will go away.

Create a Custom Boot Logo for Windows Vista

If you are a desktop customization kinda guy, one of the first things you'll want to figure out is how to create a customized boot logo. There's a little utility that you can use to create the boot logo formats.

First you'll need to download the Vista Boot Logo Generator 1.1 utility, which we'll use to create the correct logo image type. Once it's installed, you need to make sure that you run the application as administrator:

We should choose an appropriate logo file. Since I'm a big fan of linux, and not as big a fan of Windows Vista, I chose an image of Tux making windows suck that I found over here.

Choose two versions of the image, one needs to be 800×600 at 24 bit color, and the other 1024×768 at the same color depth. Both files must be in Bitmap(BMP) format. Save the file somewhere like your desktop, because we can't yet copy directly to the correct directory, until we take ownership of the file.

To take ownership of the file, you'll have to open an administrator command prompt. (type cmd into the start menu search box, and hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter), and then run this command:

takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui

Now run this command, substituting geek for your username:

cacls C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui /G geek:F

Now copy the file that you created into the C:\windows\system32\en-US\ directory. Make sure you choose the overwrite option.

Now you'll need to use the msconfig utility. Just type msconfig into the start menu search box, and then click the Boot tab:

Check the "No GUI boot" option, and we're all ready to reboot and test it out. Sweet!

War Craft III: DotA in Linux?? Why not?

It's amazing to find what you can do with Linux nowadays. Just several years ago, back when I was still in university, the WINE (Windows emulator in Linux) could only emulate Windows' mini games like Minesweeper. Now it could run many native Windows applications, including my favorite games, War Craft III!

Here's a step-by-step installation I did. I used OS Linux Ubuntu Desktop Edition v7.10 (Gutsy). Since this was my first experiment with Linux Ubuntu, please correct me if you know a more efficient way.
1. First install Linux Ubuntu by rebooting into Ubuntu Live CD. Just click "install" icon in the Ubuntu desktop.

2. Enable Ubuntu APT global repository:
# sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.bck
# sudo sed -i -e "s/#deb/deb/g" /etc/apt/sources.list
# sudo apt-get update

3. Install NVIDIA drivers (I used nVidia Quadro NVS graphics card):
# sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-generic
# sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Use 'nvidia' as the X graphic driver. Then restart X by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
# glxinfo | grep -i opengl
Make sure you can find "NVIDIA" and "Quadro NVS" displayed correctly.

4. Install WINE through APT:
# wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
# sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install wine

5. Copy the entire War Craft III folder to any path in Linux.

6. And finally, run War Craft III through WINE:
$ wine "/home/kevin/mywine/wc3/Warcraft III 1.20/War3.exe" -opengl -window

This proves that you don't have to buy Windows to play War Craft III. Amazing huh! Open-source rulezz!! Bye-bye Micro$oft..

This time I'll just show you my note on DotA heroes. I always keep this note on my XDA and revised it whenever possible. For you who has just started playing DotA and not sure what items or magic to be picked, you can start with this note. Please send me comments if you have something that I missed.

I've found a way to shorten the skill (magic) writing. I wrote it with the most important one to be picked, then followed by the 2nd most important, and so on. For example you'll find for abaddon support I wrote: ultimate --> shield --> heal --> frost mourne. It means:
lev 1: shield (because you can only get ultimate on lev 6)

lev 3: shield
lev 4: heal
lev 5: shield
lev 6: ultimate (this is the time you can get the first ultimate)

How to hack Billing Explorer 2006/2007

Last week I was curious about Billing Explorer (http://www.billingexplorer.com/). Billing Explorer is a billing software used in many game centers / internet cafes in Indonesia. This software basically protects the screen and keyboard until a guest logs in and then it will start counting the usage for later charging.

My objective is to get the administrator password for this software. There are several articles about Billing Explorer that you may find on the internet, but none of that works for version 2006 above since they introduce "encrypted data communication" *yeah right*. So I'm doing my own research. Please read below article with your own responsibility.

Here's how I hack the software:
1. Login as guest on Billing Explorer. Hey do not use your real name haha..

2. Install Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/). This software can capture and display all network packets to and from your PC.

3. Start capturing network packets from Ethereal.

4. Logoff from Billing Explorer (yeah you will be charged for it, but it worth it *haha*)

5. Click "Admin". The Billing Explorer will ask for administrator password. This is the password we are looking for. Enter anything. It will fail, but not for long *haha*

6. Login again on Billing Explorer.

7. Stop capture packets from Ethereal.

8. Analyze the packets generated between our PC and server, you'll find some form of communication like this:

What's this all about? Well you see this is a form of TCP/IP communications between Billing Explorer client and server. Basically they are translated like this:

- Client --> Server port 1500:
"Tell me all information you can give about myself". It is represented with a string "XJ6$www4$1$".

- Server --> Client:
"Okay, okay. Your administrator password is "088104104104104104" (this is still in encrypted form). The internet cafe name is "Internet Mediterania". The address is at "Apartemen Mediterania Jakarta". E-mail is "info_008@yahoo.com". And the exit password is "088104104112". It is represented with a string "YA6$www4$088104104104104104$Internet Mediterania$Apartemen Mediterania Jakarta$Email info_008@yahoo.com - http://www.billingexplorer.com$088104104112$PPP$62$433"

Hmm this is interesting.. So how can we decrypt these numbers to reveal the real administrator password? After doing some research, here's what I found:
- Password 008 (the default password): 090106106114
- Password 007: 090106106113
- Password 0123456: 091107108109110111112113
- Password abc123: 088153154155105106107

Find the algorithm already? Yeah, the first 3 numbers represent "seed" (they are 090, 090, 091, 088 respectively in above examples). Then each character of the password can be found by substracting the next 3 numbers with the "seed". Let's try with examples:
- 090106106114: Seed "090". Password: 1st char: 106 - 090 = 16. 2nd char: 106 - 090 = 16. 3rd char: 114 - 090 = 24.
- 091107108109110111112113: Seed "091". Password: 1st char: 107 - 091 = 16. 2nd char: 108 - 091 = 17. 3rd char: 109 - 091 = 18. 4th char: 110 - 091 = 19. 5th char: 111 - 091 = 20. 6th char: 112 - 091 = 21. 7th char: 113 - 091 = 22.
- 088153154155105106107: Seed "088". Password: 1st char: 153 - 088 = 65. 2nd char: 154 - 088 = 66. 3rd char: 155 - 088 = 67. 4th char: 105 - 088 = 17. 5th char: 106 - 088 = 18. 6th char: 107 - 088 = 19.

Next to convert from these numbers to the real password is very easy. 16 means "0", 17 means "1", 18 means "2", etc. And 65 means "a", 66 means "b", 67 means "c", etc. Pretty simple huh?! So can you decrypt "088104104104104104" now? Yes, it's 00000.

Well I suggest to the creator of Billing Explorer to think a more secure way of communicating the administrator password from server to its clients. One good method is by using private and public key (ie: RSA), or another simpler one is to send the hash (ie: MD5) not the password itself.

After investing a cool $84 million in devising a porn filter the Federal Government in the land down under are now reeling, thanks to a 16-year-old schoolboy. Tom Wood, (who could actually be a porn star with that name), managed to hack the security measure within 30 minutes of it going live, last Tuesday (21/08/07).

Not only did our hormone raging hacker get round the filter, he managed to preserve the status bar, indicating a functional security system. Not only is it possible for him to look at porn, he is able to deceive his parents into thinking he only ever uses the Internet to check New Scientist—the sneaky devil!

The Australian government, understandably embarrassed by the situation, attempted a remedy. A new filter called Intergrad was uploaded to central servers for domestic distribution. A whopping 40 minutes later, Tom rescued puberty-infested individuals across Australia once again.

Senator Coonan, a government official did the best she could to salvage the sorry situation with, "Unfortunately, no single measure can protect children from online harm and ... traditional parenting skills have never been more important." Basically what I interpret that to mean is; "Tom is really getting on our tits; if you don't want your kids looking at porn don't have them in the first place."

The flawed Internet filter is available as a free download here. As for Tom, he is no doubt quickly being escalated to national treasure status. Add him as a friend to your Facebook account, tell him he rocks and ladies, get him laid; if his cyber security cracking skills do not impress you, what ever will?

I downloaded it myself to see what, if any, cautions are given to users about the need to make sure that the recipient of the complaint is, in fact, responsible for the email concerned.

Well, there is such a caution but it took me a good 45 minutes to find it. The software comes with an excellent, comprehensive built-in help facility. Tucked away at the end of the page on "Sending manual complaints" is the caution:

"Note: SpamKiller does not check that the loaded addresses are appropriate for the selected message. Don't use a ... complaint unless you are certain that its recipients are responsible for the spam that you are complaining about."

I would respectfully suggest that this warning be displayed in a more prominent position, coupled with warnings about what can happen to those who use the software in an irresponsible manner so as to ensnare innocent parties.

How to: Rip DVDs with VLC

VLC Media Player is one of the most versatile media players ever. What it lacks in looks, it more than makes up for in functionality. It can read and save all the major formats of video and audio, and much more than that, it can rip DVDs. This is a pretty simple process, if you know what you’re doing. Plus, it saves you having to buy expensive DVD ripping software!

The first step is to open up VLC and click the open button (it’s the leftmost one). From the dialog box that appears select Disc and then DVD. Enter the letter of your DVD-ROM drive in the device name box, and 0 in the title box. Click OK to see if that’s what you want to rip. If it is, click the stream/save box and then settings. Otherwise, change the title to 1 and then keep increasing the number until you find the one you want. It might take a little bit, some DVDs have the main video as late as title 15.

Once you’ve got the right video though, open the settings box and uncheck the “play locally” box if it’s checked (unless you want to watch it at the same time it’s ripping) and check the file, video, and audio boxes. Select where you’re going to save your movie (save it as a .mpg, like movie.mpg) by hitting browse and then navigating to the folder where you want to save it and typing moviename.mpg in the name box. Select mp1v for the video codec and mp3 for the audio, 1024k is usually a good size and produces a nice balance between size and quality.

Click OK, and OK again. VLC should start transcoding the disc to your hard drive, where you can watch it. As a bit of a warning, when you want to watch the file with VLC, be absolutely sure that the stream/save box is unchecked in the open dialog box, or bad things might happen. Like your two hours of transcoding being erased (guilty!) You can watch the ripped files in any media player though.

VLC is by far not the best way to do this, it is the most portable. Just stick VLC on a USB key and literally do almost anything with it. I don't have room to carry the 20 common video apps I use on my key, and they are not optimized for limited write media. VLC works fine for that purpose.

1.Increase bandwidth by tweaking QoS in Windows XP Pro

The following tweak applies only to Windows XP Professional edition.

The default system behavior is that all 100% bandwidth is available, however, if there is a running application that indicates to the OS it needs to send high priority/real time data, then as long as it has the socket open, Windows XP will restrict “best effort” traffic to 80% of the bandwidth so that high priority traffic can be accommodated. Basically, applications can make this request to the operating system for QoS support using the QoS application programming interfaces (APIs) in Windows and this only applies if a specific app is requesting QoS.

If you'd like to change how much bandwidth is reserved for QoS (the default is 20% of the total bandwidth), do the following:

1. Make sure you're logged in as "Administrator" (not just any account with admin privileges).
2. Navigate to START>Run and type: gpedit.msc
3. Navigate to Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler
4. In the right window, double-click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
5. On the setting tab, check the enabled setting.
6. Where it says "Bandwidth limit %", change it to read 0 (or whatever percentage you want to reserve for high priority QoS data)
7. Click OK, close gpedit.msc

Under START > My Computer > My Network Connections > View Network Connections, right-click on your connection and under Properties (where it lists your protocols), make sure QOS Packet Scheduler is enabled.

The tweak desribed below helps boost priority for DNS & hostname resolution in general. What this means is, it helps web pages load faster, and has negligible effect on downloads (not counting the couple of ms gain with the host resolution at connect-time).

Applying this tweak assumes some proficiency in editing the Windows Registry using Regedit (Start > Run > type: regedit). As always, backup your Registry before making any changes so you can revert to the previous state if you don't like the results.

2.Host Resolution Priority Tweak

Windows 2k/XP

First, open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider

Note the following lines (all hex dwords):
Class = 008 (8) - indicates that TCP/IP is a name service provider, don't change.

LocalPriority = 1f3 (499) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 1f4 (500) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 7d0 (2000) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 7d1 (2001) - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

What we're aiming to do is increase the priority of the last 4 settings, while keeping their order. The valid range is from -32768 to +32767 and lower numbers mean higher priority compared to other services. What we're aiming at is lower numbers without going to extremes, something like what's shown below should work well:

Change the "Priority" lines to:
LocalPriority = 005 (5) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 006 (6) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 007 (7) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 008 (8) - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

Windows 9x/ME

The tweak is essentialy the same as in Windows 2000/XP, just the location in the Registry is slightly different. For a more detailed description see the Windows 2000/XP section above.

Open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider

You should see the following settings:
Class=hex:08,00,00,00

LocalPriority=hex:f3,01,00,00
HostsPriority=hex:f4,01,00,00
DnsPriority=hex:d0,07,00,00
NetbtPriority=hex:d1,07,00,00

The "priority" lines should be changed to:
LocalPriority=hex:05,00,00,00
HostsPriority=hex:06,00,00,00
DnsPriority=hex:07,00,00,00
NetbtPriority=hex:08,00,00,00

Reboot for changes to take effect.

In addition to the tweaks already covered in Win 2k/XP Registry Tweaks and More Win 2k/XP Tweaks, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 introduces a few new issues covered in the article below. Please make sure you understand what you are doing before making any changes to your Operating System. Note the information below only applies to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

3.Remove the limit on TCP connection attempts

Windws XP SP2 introduces a few new twists to TCP/IP in order to babysit users and "reduce the threat" of worms spreading fast without control. In one such attempt, the devs seem to have limited the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 (from unlimited in SP1). This argumentative feature can possibly affect server and P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time.

Rant: The forward thinking of Microsoft developers here is that you can only infect 10 new systems per second via TCP/IP ?!?... If you also consider that each of those infected computers will infect 10 others at the same rate:
second 1: 1+10 computers
second 2: 10+10*10 computers (110 new ones)
second 3: 10+100*10 computers ( 1110 new ones)
second 4: 10+1000*10 computers (11110 new ones)
....
all the way to 10*60 + 10^60 computers in a single minute (that's a number with 60 digits, or it would far exceed Earth's population). Even if we consider that 90% of those computers are unreachable/protected, one would still reach ALL of them within a minute.

In other words, even though it is not going to stop worm spreading, it's going to delay it a few seconds, limit possible network congestion a bit, and limit the use of your PC to 10 connection attempts per second in the process ! I have no problem with the new default setting limiting outbound connection attempts. Still, users should have the option to easily disable or change this setting. I might be going out on a limb here, but ever since the introduction of Windows XP I can't help thinking that I dislike all the bult-in Windows "wisardry" in a sense that the system also limits user access. That irritating trend to ease the mental load on end users is somewhat insulting, considering that Windows is to make the more "intelligent" choice instead of the end user, as well as limit their access to tuning such settings...
End of rant.

With the new implementation, if a P2P or some other network program attempts to connect to 100 sites at once, it would only be able to connect to 10 per second, so it would take it 10 seconds to reach all 100. In addition, even though the setting was registry editable in XP SP1, it is now only possible to edit by changing it directly in the system file tcpip.sys. To make matters worse, that file is in use, so you also need to be in Safe mode in order to edit it.

You only need to worry about the number of connection attempts per second if you have noticed a slowdown in network programs requiring a number of connections opened at once. You can check if you're hitting this limit from the Event Viewer, under System - look for TCP/IP Warnings saying: "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts". Keep in mind this is a cap only on incomplete outbound connect attempts per second, not total connections. Still, running servers and P2P programs can definitely be affected by this new limitation. Use the fix as you see fit.

To change or remove the limit, you can use the following program:

4. Recommended settings for Windows 2000 / XP
Windows 2000 & XP, unlike NT supports large windows as described in RFC1323 ( the 'RcvWindow' has a maximum value of 2**30 rather than 64K), and includes some other improvements over its predecessors you can use to speed up any TCP/IP transfers. , the descriptions and other options are added to provide you with better understanding and enable you to customize your settings.

All the following entries, unless otherwise noted should be placed in the Windows 2000/XP Registry under the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

TCPWindowSize

The value of TCP Window in the Windows 2000 Registry is DWORD, representing number of bytes, with range from 0 to 2^30. The recommended values (in red) optimize TCP for any high speed Internet connection and work best in most cases, however if you'd like to use a custom value follow these guidelines:

For best results, the TCPWindow should be a multiple of MSS (Maximum Segment Size). MSS is generally MTU - 40, where MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is the largest packet size that can be transmitted. MTU is usually 1500 (1492 for PPPoE connections). To determine the MTU value of your ISP, check out the Advanced Registry Editing section of our site.

There are three places in the Windows 2000 Registry where you can add the TCP Window parameter.

HKLM/SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize="256960" (DWORD, number of bytes) Valid range is from MSS to 2^30. Add the value as a decimal. Note: For best results RWIN has to be a multiple of MSS lower than 65535 times a scale factor that's a power of 2, i.e. 44 x 1460 = 64240 x 2^2 = 256960. If you choose to use a RWIN lower than 65535, you can simply make it multiple of MSS and turn scaling off (Tcp1323Opts=0)

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
TcpWindowSize="256960" (DWORD, number of bytes) Valid range is from MSS to 2^30. Add the value as a decimal. TcpWindowSize can also exist under TcpipParametersInterface - if added at this location, it overrides the global setting for this particular . Note (10/20/00): Seems MS has found another bug in Windows 2000, the TCPWindowSize should be configured with the global setting (GlobalMaxTcpWindowsSize) rather than this one - Q263088

Note: For best results RWIN has to be a multiple of MSS lower than 65535 times a scale factor that's a power of 2, i.e. 44 x 1460 = 64240 x 2^2 = 256960. If you choose to use a RWIN lower than 65535, you can simply make it multiple of MSS and turn scaling off (Tcp1323Opts=0)

Tcp1323Opts

Tcp1323Opts is a necessary setting in order to enable Large TCPWindow support as described in RFC 1323. Without this parameter, the TCPWindow is limited to 64K.

Tcp1323Opts="1" (DWORD, recommended setting is 1. The possible settings are 0 - Disable RFC 1323 options, 1 - Window scaling but no Timestamp options, 3 - Window scaling and Time stamp options.)

Note: Tcp1323Opts="3" might help in some cases where there is increased packet loss, however generally you'll achieve better throughput with Tcp1323Opts="1", since Timestamps add 12 bytes to the header of each packet.

DefaultTTL

DefaultTTL determines the time in seconds and the number of hops a packet lives. While it does not directly affect speed, a larger value increases the amount of time it takes for a packet to be considered lost, discarded and retransmitted. A value that's too small can cause packets to be unable to reach distant servers at all.

DefaultTTL="64" (DWORD, recommended setting is 64. Other settings that are widely used are 128 and 32)

EnablePMTUDiscovery

When set to 1 (True), TCP attempts to discover MTU automatically over the path to a remote host. Setting this parameter to 0 causes MTU to default to 576 which reduces overall performance over high speed connections. Note that this setting is different than our Windows 9x recommendation.

EnablePMTUDiscovery="1" (DWORD - boolean, valid settings are 0-->False and 1-->True. Many connections perform better with this entry at 1, however, if you prefer to set your upstream to send fixed 1500 packets, you might want to use 0 instead). When set at 1, establishing connections and initial transfer speed might slow down a bit, however you will get better throughput if somewhere in the path large packets need to be fragmented.

EnablePMTUBHDetect

Setting this parameter to 1 (True) enables "black hole" routers to be detected, however it also increases the maximum number of retransmissions for a given segment. In most cases you'd want to keep BHDetect to 0 (False).

SackOpts

This parameter controls whether or not SACK (Selective Acknowledgement) support is enabled, as specified in RFC 2018. SACK is especially important for connections using large TCP Window sizes.

SackOpts="1" (DWORD - boolean, recommended setting is 1. Possible settings are 0 - No Sack options or 1 - Sack Option enabled).

TcpMaxDupAcks

This parameter determines the number of duplicate ACKs that must be received for the same sequence number of sent data before "fast retransmit" is triggered to resend the segment that has been dropped in transit.

This patch fixes the problem by configuring the DNS client to continue sending queries to an unresponsive network. To install, save to your HD, unzip the .reg file, then double-click the filename.

Web Patches - faster loading of Web Pages

The following patch increases Web page loading speed, by doubling the number of possible concurrent open connections. For example, imagine a web page has 20 images and some text - in order for your browser to get all these files, it opens 2 or 4 concurrent connections, depending on the Web server. Increasing the number of open connections allows for faster retrieving of the data. Please note that the patch sets some values outside of the HTML specs. If you decide to install it, backup your Registry first. Changes will take effect after you reboot. Download the patch appropriate for your OS:
